2011 FALL CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING SEASON.........

Heartland Youth Cross Country Club (HYCCC) – A cross country club for girls and boys ages 6 (elementary school) to 14 (middle school) that will participate in the Heartland Cross Country meet series (6 cross country meets), and YES athletic sanctioned cross country meets. No prior experience with running competitively is required to participate on the HYCCC team.

Our program is designed to introduce kids to cross country running by providing an experience that is fun, competitive, social, and informative about the sport. Cross country races are trail runs across several types of terrain at distances of 1,000m (.67 mile) or 2,000m (1.2 miles) for kids 8 years old and under; 3,000m (1.9 miles) for kids 9 through 12 years old; and 4,000m (2.5 miles) for kids 13 and 14 years old.

HYCCC believes the sport of CROSS COUNTRY provides not only a vehicle for physical activity, but also intellectual and emotional growth, through the promotion of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the spirit of competition. As a member of the USA Track & Field, HYCCC adheres to policies and regulations that govern that organization and its members.

Cross-country takes place somewhere other than a track and (usually) over a distance of 1-4 kilometers (.62 - 2.5 miles) for youth, depending on age divisions and the distance desired by coaches and meet directors.
In races sponsored by national organizations, kids usually run against others within a year of their age.
In local and school meets, kids usually run against competitors of various ages in the elementray / middle school range and the high school range. Races are run at a variety of locations--on school property, golf courses, parks, custom cross country courses and so on. Courses can involve any of the following conditions: sharp twists and turns, long straightaways, flats, hills, jumping over small barriers or hay bales, even and uneven ground, and in the open or through trees. Surfaces can be any combination of grass, asphalt, gravel, and dirt/mud. Chalk lines and flags are often used to help runners follow the route. Cross-country season is traditionally during the late summer and autumn months.
